README File with Installation Notes and General Notes for the
AVM ISDN-Controller A1 Installation under DOS

The software contained on this disk can be used with
the AVM ISDN-Controllers A1 version 2.0 and 3.0.

1. Installation

A. Preparation

This disk contains the MS-DOS driver software for the AVM ISDN-
Controller A1. The installation is performed by a menu-driven
program. Please follow the installation instructions step by
step. Before you begin, make sure that the controller card has
been installed correctly in your PC, and that the jumper J1 is set
to an available I/O address (please refer to the manual).

Note: The AVM ISDN-Controller A1 and software are configured at
the factory to the default I/O base address 300h and the
       interrupt level IRQ 5.

Find out which ISDN D channel protocol your telecommunications
provider uses at your ISDN subscriber access. The AVM
ISDN-Controller A1 supports the international D channel protocol
DSS1 as well as the national protocols VN3, CT1 and Austel. In all European
countries DSS1 is or soon will be provided. If your country provides DSS1,
choose it as your D channel protocol. As a help, see the following lists.

Some countries which offer DSS1:
    - Norway
    - Sweden
    - Denmark
    - the Netherlands
    - Spain
    - Portugal
    - Italy
    - Belgium
    - Germany

Countries which offer next to DSS1 a national
D channel protocol:
    - France (the national D channel protocol is VN3)
    - Ireland (the national D channel protocol is CT1)

Countries which offer only national D channel
protocols:
    - Australia (the national D channel protocol is
      Austel)

All driver versions supplied with the AVM ISDN-Controller provide
the application interface COMMON-ISDN-API (CAPI) version 2.0.

B. Installation

The driver software for the AVM ISDN-Controller A1 is installed on
your computer by a simple installation routine. To install the software,
proceed as follows:

1. Insert the disk labeled "AVM ISDN-Controller A1, Installation DOS"
in your 3 1/2" disk drive.

2. Make this drive the current drive by entering a: or b: at
    the DOS prompt.

3. Start the installation program by entering at the DOS prompt:

	     a:install <Return>

The installation can be aborted at any time by
    pressing <Ctrl+X>.

4. Follow the instructions displayed on the screen. The default
directory for the software driver installation is C:\IDRIVER.
You may choose a different drive or directory, however. When you
confirm all your entries by pressing <Return>, the installation
program copies the software to the specified directory.

5. Next, indicate the D channel protocol used for your ISDN access.
The default protocol is DSS1. Press the <TAB> key to select the
desired option, then confirm by pressing <RETURN>. In case you have
chosen the American D channel protocol National ISDN 1 or 5ESS,
enter your SPID value. The copying of the controller software
to your computer can be aborted at any time by pressing <ESC>.

6. This completes the installation period. The controller is now ready for use
with your ISDN applications. Now you may load the driver for the
AVM ISDN-Controller by entering at the DOS prompt

	     ibase <Return>

Please note that your application software must support CAPI 2.0.

During the loading procedure IBASE.BAT loads a resident driver
program in the PC's memory. The DOS command LOADHIGH can be used
to load this driver in the memory range above 640 KB.

2. Notes

Starting the AVM ISDN-Controller A1 Automatically
For convenience, the driver software for the AVM ISDN-Controller A1 can
be loaded automatically. To do this, the batch routine IBASE.BAT can
be called from AUTOEXEC.BAT. Enter IBASE.BAT with the full path name in
your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.

   Custom Configuration
If your jumper setting is different from the standard hardware
configuration, run the configuration A1SETUP.EXE by entering at
the DOS prompt:

	 c: <RETURN>
	 cd\idriver <RETURN>
	 a1setup <RETURN>

If you have installed the software on a drive or directory
other than C:\IDRIVER, substitute the appropriate drive letter
and/or directory name in the commands above.

Please note, that only the AVM ISDN-Controller A1 version 3.0 supports
Interrupts higher 7 and the configuration by software of interrupts with
A1SETUP.EXE.
For AVM ISDN-Controllers A1 version 2.0 it is necessary to set the jumper J2
to the desired interrupt and to configure the driver also by software
(A1SETUP.EXE).

Using the AVM ISDN-Controller A1 under Microsoft Windows 3.1
   With the Virtual Device Driver
In order for Windows to load the 32-bit virtual device driver
A1BASE.386, the DOS driver must NOT be resident in memory! If
you load the DOS driver from AUTOEXEC.BAT, make sure that the
driver is removed from memory using the command

	 ibase - <Return>

before Windows 3.1 is started.

If you are updating an existing installation, please note that the
new virtual device driver for Windows makes the command which
loads the DOS driver in WINSTART.BAT obsolete. Delete the command
IBASE.BAT from the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.

Using the AVM ISDN-Controller A1 in EISA Systems
Special configuration files for installing the AVM ISDN-Controller
A1 in computers with EISA bus architecture are provided on
the original software disk. Installation using these
configuration files is described in EISA system manual.

   Driver updates
These can be downloaded over ISDN from the AVM Data Call Center using the
AVM ISDN-Tool CONNECT2. The AVM Data Call Center can be reached under the
number +49-30-39 98 43 00.
You will find additional informations and the current drivers on AVMs home
page at http://www.avm.de.

==============================================================================

Performance Characteristics of the AVM ISDN-Controller A1
With COMMON-ISDN-API Version 2.0

   Maximum Throughput
The throughput of the A1 driver, measured at Layer 3 of the ISDN B
channel protocol, reaches a maximum of 63000 bits per second.
With allowance for the necessary HDLC data-securing information,
the theoretical maximum throughput is thus achieved.

   Memory Requirements
The memory occupied by the complete AVM ISDN driver software for
the A1 controller models, with support for all ISDN D-channel and
B-channel protocols and COMMON-ISDN-API, is about 120 KB.

   Variable HDLC Block Size
Data block sizes of 128 to 2048 bytes in length can be processed
in the data security layer of the B channel.

   Transparent B Channel
The driver supports transparent processing of B channel data.
This allows voice applications to build directly on ISDN, for
example.

   Fast and Simple Loading
To be completely operational, the controller requires the files
ISDNLOAD.EXE, ISDNLOAD.CFG and A1.EXE. Applications may load the driver by
calling IBASE.BAT with no awareness of the underlying ISDN hardware required.
